Fitness during the 2020 pandemic

With most gyms now closed throughout the United States, people are in a scuffle to get their daily workouts in. The everyday stress levels from work, parenting, and domestic responsibilities at the homefront have adults of all ages yearning to get back into some sort of workout regime again and let out their built-up stress. According to the American Heart Association, adults should be getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity, or a minimum of 75 minutes of a vigorous workout plan a week (Forni 2020).

So how exactly are our abilities to work out effectively being constrained by this pandemic? The answer is quite simple. The everyday resources we have around us are enough to serve our fitness needs. For example, running around the block or a nearby park are a perfect means for getting your cardiovascular exercises in for the day. A light jog or running spree for about 30 minutes to an hour a day is sufficient enough to maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep your metabolism in good shape! If you are looking for a more vigorous exercise routine to do at home, do not fear! You can use medium to heavy weight household items in substitution of dumbbells and barbells. Whether it be gallons of milk/water, backpacks filled with books, bags of pet food, etc. there are many different alternatives to use as means of weights for squats or lifting.

We should not let the temporary shutdown of gyms be the reason that we neglect our health when we have the means of continuing an active lifestyle all around us. After all, during this pandemic the one thing that we need the most is a healthy immune system which is achieved through healthy eating habits and a consistent workout routine.
